Headaches that are not relieved by sumatriptan are sometimes caused by conditions that need other treatment.
The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. This medicine is available in 3 forms. Since Imitrex comes in packages of 9, you are allowed 9 per month. To relieve your migraine as soon as possible, use this medicine as soon as the headache pain begins. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label.

subcutaneous injections, two intranasal doses (up to 40 mg/day) and two oral doses (up to 200 mg/day) per 24-hour period with a minimum of 1 hour between subcutaneous doses and 2 hours between nasal doses and oral doses. This medicine is for use only in the nose.
After you have finished injecting the medicine, be sure to follow the precautions in the patient directions about safely discarding the empty cartridge and the needle. For injection dosage form: For migraine or cluster headaches: Adults— Alsuma™, Imitrex®, and Sumavel®: 4 or 6-milligram (mg) injected under the skin.
Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. This medicine is given as a shot under your skin (usually on the stomach, thighs, or upper arms). Do not use more than 3 doses in any 24-hour period. Sumatriptan also reduces substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.. Read and follow the instructions carefully. After you take the other medicine, check with your doctor right away. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, and do not use it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.
Always return the empty cartridge and needle to their container before discarding them. If no relief is experienced after the initial dose, a second dose … Even if you get warning signals of a coming migraine (an aura), you should wait until the headache pain starts before using sumatriptan.
Do not use this medicine for a headache that is different from your usual migraines. The injection is usually prescribed for people with cluster headaches, whereas the injection, spray or tablets may be prescribed for people with migraines. Do not use more than 2 doses in 24 hours. The safety of treating > 4 headaches in a 30-day period is not established.
You may use a single dose vial, prefilled syringe, or a prefilled autoinjector. Sumatriptan (Imitrex) Nasal 20mg in one nostril may repeat once Contraindications; as above.
